September Spotlight- Maine Needs
When the world feels overwhelming, it’s easy to forget how much good is happening close to home. People Helping People is our way of spotlighting the Portlanders who are showing up, making a difference, and reminding us that we all have something to offer. Hope isn’t something we wait for, it’s something we build together, and all across the city, you will find examples of people reminding us that the most powerful force for change is the simple, human act of people helping people.
Bearing witness to the kindness of community is healing, and being a part of that community can offer a lovely sense of connection and hopefulness.

Maine Needs
If you’re looking for an organization that proves small acts can create big change, look no further than Maine Needs! What began as a facebook group to help connect neighbors donated goods to those in need has expanded into an ever growing community operation that leverages the power of people to ensure that no one in Maine goes without their basic needs being met. Maine Needs is striving to “build a community where everyone helps and no one goes without,” and when it comes to getting involved, there is truly a role for everyone. This month, we spoke with Maine Needs Volunteer Program Manager, Jo Albanese, to learn more about their mission and the role volunteers play in making their work possible.
Please share a bit about Maine Needs and the work you do.
We share the needs of the community with you to inspire us all to give what we can. Whether it's time and energy through volunteering, material goods, money, skills, or support, we ask everyone to get involved in their own way so we can connect what is needed with what you have to give. We reach individuals and families statewide via partnership with the social services community in support of asylum seekers, students, the unhoused population, survivors of domestic violence, and those facing financial adversity.
What brought you to Maine Needs?
Personally, I was drawn to Maine Needs' mission and truly appreciated the various ways in which the community can choose to engage. The layers of community involved in the organization is complex and beautiful, and the energy surrounding the mission is inspiring. I'm ever in awe of the individuals that share their time, energy, and compassion with our community. It fills my heart with hope.
Can you share a bit about the role volunteers play in your work?
Volunteers are not only at the heart of the organization but are the heart that keeps it moving. They are pivotal and truly make this place the warm space it is. Maine Needs wouldn't be where it is today without the incredible generosity of the community, whether it be by donating material goods or sharing volunteer time in and/or outside of the organization's physical space, every effort is profound and appreciated.
What does a typical volunteer shift at Maine Needs look like?
While every day is a little bit different, typically volunteers help us with sorting through incoming donations, filling provider orders or helping us with various projects around the space. Folks can 'make it their own adventure' when they come in, choosing opportunities that speak most to them.
What is something that gives you hope?
Being witness to the energy and love that is shared here everyday fills my heart with hope. From the volunteers that share their time with us, the providers that dedicate their hearts to their work, hope is in every layer here. It's a true privilege to walk alongside the volunteers and providers that create the fabric of Maine Needs.
Volunteer Tips
What advice would you give to those interested in volunteering or wanting to help give back/ support the community right now?
We live in an incredible community where there are so many wonderful efforts happening that sometimes it can feel daunting to figure out where to start. Showing up in whatever way feels right to the individual is important, whether that be by volunteering in-person, advocating on social media, educating others on missions that speak to the individual, donating material goods, etc, every effort matters and has an impact. If there is an organization that you've been curious about but hesitant to start, reach out to an individual on their staff or chat with someone who has experience with that organization to see if it's the right fit for you. There are so many incredible volunteer opportunities out there that there is bound to be something that aligns to every individual's interests. Bearing witness to the kindness of community is healing, and being a part of that community can offer a lovely sense of connection and hopefulness.
If you’re interested in contributing to the work of Maine Needs, there are multiple ways to get involved, including:
Volunteer to sort, pack or organize goods
Donate gently used or new material items
Assemble an essentials kit
Organize a collection drive
